SIE is delighted to host this interview with Dr Stephen Porges, who will be interviewed by an advanced Sensory Integration practitioner. This is a great opportunity to learn more about polyvagal theory and how and why it is relevant to the practice of Sensory Integration Practitioners. This session is complemented by an interview with Dr Natalie Hadiprodjo and a discussion between three Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioners working in different areas of clinical practice with children and adults.

This course, consisting of three parts, will provide an opportunity to increase your knowledge and understanding of Polyvagal Theory and learn more about how and why it is relevant to your work as a Sensory Integration Practitioner. Polyvagal Theory, created by Stephen Porges, PhD, emphasises the role that the autonomic nervous system and especially the vagus nerve, plays in regulating an individual's health and behaviour. This theory describes the physiological and psychological states which underlie daily behaviour as well as challenges related to an individual's wellness and mental health.

Part 1: An exclusive interview with Dr Porges discussing this theory. Dr Porges will be interviewed by Leanne Duggan, an Occupational Therapist working in the field of Mental Health and an Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner.

Part 2: Hear Dr Natalie Hadiprodjo, an Occupational Therapist, counsellor, play therapist, and lecturer in play therapy at Deakin University, in conversation with Kim Elter, who is also an Occupational Therapist and Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner. In this interview, Kim and Natalie will explore the importance of play as a mediating factor in creating a sense of safety between two individuals. Natalie is one of the authors of Integrating Therapeutic Play Into Nursing and Allied Health Practice - a developmentally sensitive approach to communicating with children. Natalie and Kim will discuss how the principles of polyvagal theory complement this using an attachment-based model in practice, supporting clinicians working in both the hospital and community settings.

Part 3: Listen to three Advanced Practitioners, Karen Forest , Kim Elter, and Kate Broughton, discuss Polyvagal Theory and how the principles of the theory influence their work as Sensory Integration practitioners. Kate, Karen, and Kim are occupational therapists working across different settings and clinical populations.
