My Journey into Sensory Integration

I encountered Sensory Integration several years ago at the beginning of my career when I worked as a Paediatric Occupational Therapist in an early years setting. Whilst in this role I quickly became aware of sensory needs experienced by many of the children accessing the service and realised that I needed to learn more about SI in order to give sufficient advice and support. My journey with the SI Network officially began in 2012 when I completed module 1, I finished the programme in 2017 having obtained an MSc in Sensory Integration. I am currently employed as a specialist occupational therapist supporting children and young people with Autism. I really enjoy the diversity of my current job and I use SI on a daily basis to engage, motivate and regulate the students.

How I use SI in my practice

I consistently use knowledge of Sensory Integration theory to guide my practice. Sensory strategies are integrated into the school to help regulate students and I use SI theory to guide assessments, in-class support and 1:1 sessions. I deliver regular training to parents and staff at the school to help raise awareness of sensory needs and to help ensure that sensory strategies and environmental modification are implemented both at home and school. I work as part of a trans-disciplinary team which consists of speech and language therapists and occupational therapists; this has helped me to differentiate language supports used to support students.

Why I am committed to supporting others to study SI

I am passionate about Sensory Integration as I have seen the benefits and impact that Sensory Integration Therapy can have first-hand. The journey of completing the MSc in Sensory Integration has been such a positive and invaluable part of my career that I am keen to support others through the process and excited to be part of the new online initiative.
