EmphaSIze September 2024: Transitions and Routines
By Sensory Integration Education, 4th September 2024
Welcome to the September issue of EmphaSIze where this month we're focusing on Transitions and Routines!
With the new academic year already in place for most of us, this can be an exciting time for children and teens. However, for those with sensory processing issues, transitioning to a new school or college or starting back after a long summer break and adjusting to a new routine can bring a number of challenges that make it difficult for these individuals to succeed in a school or college setting.
In this month's EmphaSIze, we've put together useful information, research, articles, books, and product ideas to help better inform ourselves of how we can support these individuals navigate these transitions and changes in routines.

Free Guide: Sensory-Based Behaviour in the Classroom
If you work in a school environment and have ever been frustrated at not understanding why a student is behaving the way they are, then there could be unmet sensory needs underlying this behaviour.
With 1 in 6 children having sensory processing differences that make it hard to learn and function in school, it’s likely there are undetected and unsupported sensory needs in many classrooms today.
This free guide introduces you to sensory processing, explains what sensory-based behaviour looks like in the classroom, and highlights actionable, easy strategies to make your school more inclusive of all students’ sensory needs.
Thoughts from a Therapist: Managing the Sensory Challenges of School
Back to school, we go! It’s the start of a new term and for some children and young people, this can bring with it a host of sensory challenges as soon as they walk through the school gates.
In this month’s Thoughts from a Therapist blog, Anna Willis takes a look at the sensory challenges students face in the school environment - from smells, sounds, visual and touch to movement and praxis challenges – and offers up one way of supporting self-advocacy for these individuals.
Starting Pre-School with Sensory Differences
For many children, pre-school or nursery school is a great adventure and a place where young children get their first taste of making new friends and participating in group activities.
Whilst this is great for most children, there are aspects of pre-school that can be challenging for children with sensory processing differences that impact their ability to tolerate sensory input or their ability to discriminate sensory information which often results in difficulties with motor coordination.
In her latest blog, Dr Lelanie Brewer addresses a number of these aspects as well as ways parents can help get their children ready for pre-school.
