Do you work with...
...individuals whose behaviours change in new environments, becoming more withdrawn, agitated, or distressed? Are ward staff, carers, or family members finding certain behaviours difficult to manage, or are they unsure of how to provide the right support at home, in care settings, or in the community? These behaviours may be linked to sensory processing differences—the way the brain receives, organises and responds to sensory information.

Have you ever...
...worked with clients who seem overly sensitive to noise or textures, while others appear disconnected from their surroundings? Perhaps you’ve supported individuals who struggle with focus in busy environments, have difficulty with everyday tasks like dressing or eating, or face challenges with movement and posture.
Sensory integration and processing...
...play a crucial role in how we focus, move, regulate emotions, and engage in daily life. When sensory processing does not work as expected, individuals may experience sensory sensitivities, difficulties with movement, or challenges in managing their emotions and behaviours. By understanding how sensory integration and processing works, professionals, carers, and families can better support individuals, adapting environments and activities to meet their sensory needs and improve their overall participation and well-being.
This course will enable you to...
Explain the eight sensory systems and how they help us understand and interact with the world. Understand how sensory integration works and why it’s essential for daily activities and wellbeing. Recognise sensory processing differences and how they can affect participation. Gain a basic understanding of the brain’s role in sensory processing, including key pathways and structures. Identify common challenges related to sensory processing and their impact on movement and behaviour. Use the Sensory Integration Education Sensory Insights Questionnaire to identify sensory preferences and areas for future support. Develop and apply practical strategies to support sensory processing, whether through activities, environmental changes, or task adaptations. Understand your role within a team when supporting individuals with sensory needs and know when to seek specialist advice from an Ayres Sensory Integration practitioner.
